Link Building Tips

I decided to post some link building tips because the methods for building links has changed quite a bit over the years. Techniques that worked quite well just a few years ago are no longer as effective as they used to be. It can be quite overwhelming trying to keep up with the latest link building methods, and my hope is that these tips will help you stay on the right track.

Here are my top link building tips, updated in Dec 2009:

  1. Seek out one-way links when possible. Reciprocal links are no longer effective, and although you may gain some benefit from them, your time is better spent pursuing one-way links from quality sites. The easiest way to get one-way links is to purchase them on exchanges like Text Link Ads, or to use a link building software like SENuke.

  2. If you can afford it, get listed on the Yahoo Directory. This costs $299 per year, but if you only have 1 or 2 sites and you can afford it, it is money well spent since it will give you some serious link juice.

  3. Try to get listed on the Open Directory. Next to the Yahoo directory, the Open Directory/Dmoz is the only other directory that will deliver serious link juice to your site. Unlike Yahoo, it is free to get listed, but you have to be very persistent to get listed.

  4. Do online article marketing. It is easy to burn out with this method, so the best path is to use automated software that will make the task easier for you. Magic Article Rewriter/Submitter is the article tool with the best reputation. You can also do article marketing with SENuke.

  5. Link from Web 2.0 sites. The only automated tool I have found for doing this is SENuke. If you do it manually, focus on popular Web 2.0 sites like Hubpages and Squidoo. Create pages on these sites, add content, and create links back to your main site.

  6. Create bookmarks to your site. Like article marketing, this can get tedious really fast, so you need to either outsource your bookmarking, or use an automated social bookmarking tool. I use SENuke myself, but I have also heard a lot of good things about Bookmarking Demon.

  7. Get links from blog networks. The blog network I use is Article Marketing Automation, but there are other reputable ones as well, like Unique Article Wizard. This technique goes hand in hand with online article marketing. To use these networks, you simply submit your articles and bloggers that are part of the network will start listing your articles on their blogs (the links you have in your articles will not be edited). This is a powerful way to build links over time, and it requires some patience but the results are great.

  8. Post videos on sites like Youtube. The description box allows you to post a link, so you can link directly to your site from a hugely popular place like Youtube. The main hurdle for most people is creating the videos, as this can be time consuming. However, your video does not have to be fancy, just informative. Consider creating a quick powerpoint slide and recording it using a free screen capture program like CamStudio.

I know I've thrown a lot out there, but don't feel overwhelmed. You don't have to do all of these things to get high rankings on the search enginges. Typically, if you target long-tail keywords, you just need to throw in a few of these link building tips for each page you create, it should only take a few weeks before you notice a significant boost in your rankings.
